The Time Has Come The End Is Nigh Upon The Shelf The Blog Must Lie

Top Ten Reasons To Be A Bookdealer

1.You've more delicious books to read than you'll know what to do with
2.You don't have to pay for them (well not exactly)
3.You'll never have to meet a deadline or wear dastardly corporate ensembles
4.Jazz Jazz Jazz
5.The tea breaks are plentiful
6.Everyone assumes you are marvellously intelligent and have read everything
7.Very occasionally the customers are marvellously intelligent and have read everything.
8.Sometimes they look like Cary Grant
9.You get tenure (I have left three times and counting)
10.Most of the time it's simply too delightful to be a real job

Hold On To Your Hats TotallyBooked winding things down this week - due to a serious lack of technology in the new abode Bibliomiss will be bookmarked until further notice...as opposed to its usual place, paused, perched open and upside-down on your list of favourites (if not, why not??!!). Much focus required to complete first draft of The Novel That Changed The Face of Literature and polish off the odd Picasso in between. It's been a blast, dear reader, this past year of literary banter, self-indulgent list-making, Bridget Jones-meets-Carrie Bradshaw and everything in between. Opening bookshops moving bookshops closing bookshops...it's no wonder I'm ready to stay still for a while and write one of these goddamn books myself.

Bibliomiss Recommends: The Sexual Life of Catherine M., C.Millet

21 February 2005

Sublime weekend of hollywood proportions paved with gin, much lounging, a little Prada acquisition, markets-in-the-park, UK Vogue and some gallery hopping - some excellent sixties landscape pieces having drawn me back for a second take.Caught The Aviator - not flawless by any stretch of the imagination, and a little Scorsese-long but otherwise rather fascinating with simply darling shoes...Accesorised to the hilt with Cary on the arm, Miss Holly is finding all this summer sauntering most agreable.

17 February 2005

Grrrr ...if I see another blasted book on the goddamn Battle of Britain I shall hang myself from the blimmin rafters. Where's the philosophy, the art, the literature??? I've been duped into a day far too similar to yesterday. The bookdealer doth protest!!! Might take a break to play customer and stock up on some summer avo-in-the-park reading. A handful of Hercule, one or two Sherlocks, some Somerset Maugham and a snippet more Dorothy Parker should just about do it.

Holly Recommends: Charade, 1963 - Audrey and Cary's fantastically funny Parisian escapade.

16 February 2005

Bibliomiss completely exhausted having spent the entire day pricing pyramids of militaria. The bottle of pinot on my kitchen bench beckons to me like a mirage, and my sofa shines like a beacon. One Sleep til CG, when I expect all the world will be roses again.

HG Recommends: Fellow Blogger and newly published Belle de Jour: The Intimate Adventures of a London Call-Girl (Miss Holly hugely proud of Belle getting her bits into print proper having been a fan for the longest time)

15 February 2005

Miss Holly anxiously awaiting the return of Cary Grant (the darling boy thinks it about time he played a starring role which of course, just quietly, thrills HG to bits) this week - necessary distractions include multiple handbag acquisitions, a Lancome makeover, several coffee dates, Oliver Stone's ghastly version of Alexander, a Miss K brunch, a simply divine pair of red stilettos, and Susanna Clarke's "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell". Plans afoot to bash out the first draft of booker prize-winner once gloriously unemployed. Have gathered impressive list of city's best wine and tapas bars for inevitable moments of writers block and cabin fever.

Ahhh bliss..Mademoiselle Holly and Miss K out and about a la bar reviews. An unexpected chardonnay pinot grigio blend to begin and a not half bad red to follow, luscious tapas and delightful conversation. A perfect evening n'est pas? Having to play the dutiful goddaughter this evening, entertaining Very Important Politicians - or at least making sure their glasses are full...the Glamour Factor is seriously questionable and I imagine I shall be thrilled to sneak an early night asap. The New Abode is simply splendid...am so looking forward to actually being there to enjoy it properly.

Apartmento Fantastico found on Friday - the beer and sparkles are chilling in the fridge as we speak in fact. Miss Holly most chuffed at her unquestionable talent for stylish real estate with plans afoot to celebrate St Tropez style over oysters and crepes and sublime pinot gris. Think twenties glamour, sea views, a park around the corner and high street fashion down the road. And shall I mention all the blissful hours of summer to enjoy it sans employment? Ooooo I love apartment dwelling says Eloise...

LISTENING TO Alanis, (bless her achey breaky heart) So-Called Chaos READING Jonathan Raban, Soft City EATING lemonade iceblocks ...do you actually eat iceblocks? WATCHING Elizabeth as in Cate Blanchett as in I've seen it four times and it's still brilliant WONDERING if I should just sell my soul and write a trashy chic-lit something-or-other, sell the film rights and make bundles of money EXCEPT I've always had this annoying mission to write the "catcher in the rye for our times". Bugger. Deep down I guess I'll always be a poor poet. In stiletto heels. With matching handbag.

READING Picasso: Life and Art, Pierre Daix CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF Rachel Yamagata, Happenstance WATCHING Alfie (don't) LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING Closer WRITING a business plan to ensure future fame and fortune (watch this space - that's about as far as I've got) WEARING my new malibu barbie beige and amber stilettos WITH Miss Crabb uma-in-the-avengers houndstooth silk dress DRINKING chinese rose tea DREAMING OF mmm...unemployment.....
